Changing a program, major, or minor (SFAREGS/SGASTDN)
Understanding the Banner configuration of curricula
Programs
A program in Banner includes School, Degree, and Level, with a naming convention of SchoolDegree_Level (e.g., LABA_UG), followed by major (s) and minor(s).
Priority
Programs, majors, and minors are numbered separately in order of priority. Priority 10 is first, priority 20 is second, etc.
For all degree programs in Banner, the primary program is classified as priority 10, a secondary program as priority 20 , and so forth. [This includes those that no longer exist (Newcomb College, School of Engineering, Graduate School, etc.)]
Dual degree students will have a priority 10 degree program (primary) and a priority 20 degree program (secondary).
For double major students, all programs are associated with a primary priority 10 major.
The primary major must be in the program’s school (e.g., the primary priority 10 program is LABA_UG, the primary priority 10 major must be in the School of Liberal Arts, could be ANTH, COMM, ENGL, SOCI, UNDL etc.
The first major under a degree is priority 10, regardless of the degree’s own priority (e.g., priority 20 degree has a priority 10 major).
Undeclared majors
In order to associate an undeclared major with a college within the University, we have created specific “undeclared” majors to be used by each school. For example , UNDL=Undeclared Liberal Arts, UNDB=Undeclared Business, etc.
Minors
The first minor under a degree is also priority 10, regardless of other majors already declared.
Also note that for minors, the Department field does not populate, and is not needed.
Changing a program, major, or minor
If the student is not currently enrolled in the term of change, updates to degree programs, majors, and minors are done in SGASTDN.
If the student is enrolled in the term of change, updates occur in SFAREGS.
Use the following instructions whether updated in SGASTDN or SFAREGS.
In the key block of SGASTDN or SFAREGS, enter the student ID and term effective for the change. Check the View Current/Active Curricula checkbox. Go.
Duplicate Current/Active curricula
Select the Curricula tab.
Select the record for the program you want to update, usually it will be the first record. The first record, is the Current/Active priority 10 (primary) program.
Create a new record by clicking on the DUPLICATE button. The Duplicate button saves the existing curriculum in order to keep history and creates a new record for change to be made.
Modify the duplicated curricula
Next block to the Field of Study block.
Adding a major within the same program
Enter the following values in the identified fields:
Activity | Active |
Type | Major |
Priority | 20 |
Catalog Term | Term of effective change |
Enter the Field of Study (the Department field auto-fills). Save.
Changing a major within the same program
Overwrite the Field of Study. Save.
In this scenario, there should be only one Current/Active curricula. If there are other Current/Active curricula in the Curriculum block, Duplicate and Inactivate it and Save.
Adding a minor
Enter the following values in the identified fields:
Activity | Active |
Type | Minor |
Priority | 10 (or the next priority in the sequence) If there is a currently existing priority 10 minor, the minor you’re adding is the priority 20 minor (and so on). |
Catalog Term | Term of effective change |
Enter the Field of Study (the Department field auto-fills). Save.
NOTE: Graduate Business programs use specializations, which are treated as minors.
Removing a major or minor
Click on the line of the major/minor being removed to select it. Click Delete. Save.
Changing a major when a program change is needed
After duplicating the curricula, enter the new program’s “program string” using the naming convention CollegeDegree_Level. Tab to auto-fill the remaining fields.
Next block to the Field of Study block to change the Field of Study field to the new major. Save.
In this scenario, there should be only one Current/Active curricula. If there are other Current/Active curricula in the Curriculum block, Duplicate and Inactivate it and Save.
Adding a second degree program
Dual Degrees
When an undergraduate chooses to pursue dual degrees when an admissions record is not needed, we add the second degree program as a priority 20.
Graduate interdivisional transfers (IDTs)
Graduate interdivisional transfers involve changing the priority 10 program while retaining both programs on the record.

Graduate students
For graduate students, adding a program to the learner record only comes as a result of earning a master’s degree during a PhD matriculation.
The student must be admitted as a PhD originally in order to add the master’s program. If the student was originally admitted as a master’s student and has completed the master’s degree, do not add the PhD as described in this article. The student must first be admitted to the PhD program, which will push the PhD curriculum to the learner record upon confirmation. See also Admitting a student with an existing learner record
To add a master’s degree to a PhD student’s record, see Adding a master's program for PhD student
Graduate students who are pursuing two different master’s degrees concurrently, usually dual degrees, must be admitted to both programs.
For example if an MBA student wants to also pursue an MPH at the same time, they must also be admitted to the MPH program.
Updating the learner record
Duplicate the current/active curricula
Select the Curricula tab.
Select the record for the program you want to update, usually it will be the first record. The first record, is the Current/Active priority 10 (primary) program.
Create a new record by clicking Insert.
Enter the new program information
Ensure the priority for the second program is 20 and confirm/update the catalog term. Enter the new program string.
Enter the following values in the identified fields:
Activity | Active |
Type | Major |
Priority | 20 |
Catalog Term | Term of effective change |
Enter the major code in the Field of Study field. Save.
Removing a degree program
We remove a program when a student pursuing dual degrees decides to drop one of the programs.
Removing a priority 20 program
In the Curricula tab, locate the priority 20 program. Click the DUPLICATE button and change the Activity field to INACTIVE. Save.
Removing a priority 10 program
In the Curricula tab, locate the priority 20 program. Click the UPDATE button and change the priority to 10. Save.
This is the only reason the Update button is used.
