Viewing student cohorts

Student cohort codes are used to identify certain populations of students and to track student progress toward degree.  Tulane uses cohort codes to report IPEDS retention and completion numbers for NTC and SoPA undergraduate populations.  NTC freshmen and transfer cohorts are applied to student records at the call of census.  Tulane also uses cohort codes to identify other special populations such as POSSE and College Track students.  Once a student is assigned a cohort, that cohort stays on their record permanently.

STVCHRT

Cohort codes are created in STVCHRT and follow a particular format:  a four-character identifier beginning with the letter R, followed by a six-digit term code.  The first 4 characters identify the cohort type, while the term indicates the term the student entered the cohort.

  • RFTF202240 identifies a new NTC freshman whose first semester at Tulane was fall of 2022

  • RTRF202310 identifies an incoming NTC transfer student whose first semester at Tulane was spring of 2023

  • RPON202430 identifies a New Orleans POSSE student who entered Tulane in fall 2024

An undergraduate student is considered a “completer” if they earn their bachelor-level degree within six years of entry into the University.  This is noted in STVCHRT by the degree level and End term in the record.

SGASADD

Student cohort codes are applied in the STUDENT COHORT section of SGASADD.  In the example below, the cohort “From Term” is equal to the student’s cohort term, and the “To Term” is until the end of time.  Cohort coding must never be modified, deleted, or end-dated.
