Scheduling service learning sections
With the implementation of CLSS, the Service Learning process has been modified for everyone involved: the academic departments offering the lecture sections, the Center for Public Service offering the service sections, and the Registrar’s Office.
Academic departments will upload the lecture or seminar section(s) of their course(s) that will offer optional or mandatory service learning.
Academic departments will now also upload the service learning sections that will be offered with the lecture/seminar sections. (These sections are schedule type “SER” with course number X890, X891, etc.) Scheduler should also update the service learning’s course title to reflect its co-requisite lecture.
The academic department’s scheduler will include the formatted notes below in the Comments to Students > “Course Notes” field. The scheduler will also copy those same notes into the “Comments to Registrar” field, alerting us to do step 4.
Course Note format for the LECTURE section: Mandatory/optional 20/40-hour service learning component SUBJ 1890-00.
Course Note format for the SERVICE section: Mandatory/optional 20/40-hour service learning component for SUBJ 1010-00. For more information on the service-learning project for this class, visit https://cps.tulane.edu/academics/service-learning-course
CPS will approve or reject each section via workflow, which will be triggered when the scheduler saves the service learning section in CLSS.
The Registrar will link the two sections as co-requisites (which can’t be done in CLSS, only in Banner).
If the service learning section will no longer be offered, please cancel that section AND remove any Course Note references from the lecture/seminar that would have been its co-requisite.
Do not cross-list a service learning section with its co-requisite lecture/seminar. Doing this will cause the meeting pattern of the co-requisite lecture/seminar (the “parent” section”) to auto-populate into the service learning section; the service cannot have the same meeting as the co-requisite – that will cause a time-conflict error to students who try to register for both.
ID numbers should never be released via ticket, phone, or email. Students can access their ID numbers via Gibson. Students needing ID numbers for transcript orders can enter their SSN or 9 0's in the ID number field.
