Checking for errors when proofing diploma names

Diploma Name Rules:

You must use your legal name on your diploma.The following exceptions may apply:

Middle names

Middle names may be omitted, abbreviated, or appear in full. You may include your maiden name as a middle name.

Example: Legal Name - Mary Jane Smith

The following are acceptable:

  • Mary Smith

  • Mary J. Smith

  • Mary Jane Smith

  • Mary Jane Johnson Smith

Abbreviated middle names must be punctuated with a period at the end.

 Chosen first name

Students who have a chosen first name other than their legal first name may use this name, as long as it has been recorded on record with the University Registrar. You may edit your chosen name on your Gibson Portal.

Example: Legal Name - John Henry Jones

The following are acceptable:

  • Jack Jones

  • Jane Jones

  • J. Henry Jones

Abbreviated first names must be punctuated with a period at the end.

LatinX students 

LatinX students who wish to append their mother's maiden name to their legal last name with or without a hyphen may do so. If both names are in Banner, both names must be on the diploma.
