Reviewing completion of degree requirements (for graduation coordinators)

The following is a list of items graduation coordinators should check prior to certifying a student for graduation. We advise checking each prospective graduate’s record at least twice before certifying: once after the add period ends and again just prior to certification.

Major/Minor Certification Checklist

  • Students should not have any missing, in-progress, or incomplete grades on their transcript.

  • Credits for the major/minor/certificate meet the minimum number required for the award

  • All required coursework should be completed. Completion of required coursework is captured on the audit. Contact our office to refine your audits as needed.

  • The minimum GPA should meet the requirement for the award.

  • As appropriate, departmental honors should be entered.

Degree Certification Checklist

  • If the student is earning multiple awards, overlap rules must be reviewed: the student cannot count more than 25% of the total credit hours required for the smaller degree, not to exceed 12 credit hours.

  • No missing, in progress, or incomplete grades are on the student record/transcript.

  • Credits for award meet the minimum required to earn the award.

  • GPA meets minimum required for the award.

  • All pointers (grades that count toward multiple awards) are assigned between awards before certification.

  • Where applicable, thesis and dissertation titles are applied to the student record before certification.

  • Where applicable, thesis and dissertations are defended prior to certification.
