The most common reason for courses missing from the degree audit is an inaccuracy of the courses' pointers indicated in Banner.

What are pointers?

Pointers refer to the level to which a course applies, or “points” to. All courses at a given level apply to that level’s GPA.

How does Banner determine which pointer/level is applied to a course?

If the student’s priority 10 curriculum level at the time of registration MATCHES any of the levels indicated in SCACRSE, the course’s level will be the same as the level of the priority 10 curriculum.

  • For example, MGSC 6020 has both UG and GR levels in SCACRSE, so when an UG student registers for the course, the course’s level will be UG.

  • For example, SOWK 7230 has both GR and G2 levels in SCACRSE, so when a student with a GR program at priority 10 and a G2 program at priority 20 registers for the course, the course’s level will be GR.

If the student’s priority 10 curriculum level at the time of registration DOES NOT MATCH any of the levels indicated in SCACRSE, the course’s level will be the first level entry in SCACRSE.

  • For example, MGSC 7310’s first level entry in SCACRSE is GR, so when an UG student registers for the course, the course’s level will be GR.

Where are pointers/levels are viewed?

Current or future term registrations

Pointers for current or future term registered courses are viewed in SFAREGS.

Current or future term registered courses can only be changed from one level to another; courses cannot be double pointed to multiple levels until the courses have been graded.

Graded courses in academic history

Pointers for graded courses are viewed in SHATCKN. See also: Viewing and interpreting pointers (SHATCKN)

ONLY graded courses can be pointed/applied to multiple levels (“double pointed”) in SHATCKN.

Requesting pointer/level changes

To request pointer/level changes or double pointers, complete the pointer template, and submit to our team via ticket.

Troubleshooting techniques

  1. Using Degree Works, identify the level of audit that’s missing the courses. Note that the audit’s level reads from the student’s curriculum level in SGASTDN, which can also be used for troubleshooting.

    1. Click the Degree drop down and select the audit missing the course.

    2. Note the level.

  2. Identify the current pointers for the missing courses.

    1. For courses currently in progress, review the pointer in the Level field in SFAREGS.

    2. For graded courses, review the pointer in the Level section in SHATCKN. See also: Viewing and interpreting pointers (SHATCKN)

  3. Determine if the pointers match the level of the audit.

    1. If not, open a request to change pointers or double-point courses. For example, if your audit is at the G2 level and the course’s pointer is at the GR level, you’ll need to request to change the pointer from one level to the other or to point the course to two levels.

    2. If so, contact the Degree Audit team for additional troubleshooting.
