Navigating a degree audit

Degree Works is an academic planning and degree audit tool. The degree audit helps students and advisors effectively navigate curriculum requirements, as well as monitor progress towards degree completion.  The degree audit provides an easy-to-understand checklist, outlining the requirements needed to complete a particular program, degree, major, and minor.  The audit takes into account all previous, transfer, and in-progress coursework.

This section presents a high-level overview of a degree audit.  For more detailed instructions for how to read blocks contained within an audit, please see instructions for reading a degree audit block.

Degree audit foundations

Please note:

  • Audits are refreshed nightly.

  • Incorrect student coding in Banner will prevent Degree Works from displaying the student’s audit correctly.

  • The audit calculates the “best fit” when fulfilling requirements. As the student enrolls in and completes additional coursework, classes may shift to fulfil other requirements within the audit.

  • The Degree Works audit is not part of a student's official academic record, however it is used as an advising and degree certification tool.

  • Undesired changes made by the algorithm can be managed via exceptions by the Registrar's Office. For more information on how to submit a petition to process an exception, please see Submitting degree audit exceptions.

Header

The header section of a student’s degree audit lists relevant information about a student’s degree program including:

  • The student’s name and TUID

  • Classification

  • Program, major, and minor

  • Advisors

  • Graduation application

  • Holds

The header defaults to a student’s primary program.  If a student has multiple programs, they can be viewed and selected from the Degree box in the top right corner of the header:

Additionally, there are three icons above the header:

  • Create PDF

    • Allows you to save the audit as a PDF on your local computer.

  • Contacts

    • Clicking the Contacts menu will open a popup window that lists the student’s email address along with a list all advisors assigned to the student and the advisors’ email addresses. The advisor types are also indicated.

  • More options

    • Clicking the will allow you to see the student’s class history or the petitions menu.

Audit types and historical audits

Just below the header are some audit selection menus:

Degree Works will default to the student’s latest Academic audit.

What-If audits can also be selected here.  More information about What-If audits can be found here.

We are not currently using the Athletic Eligibility audit functionality.

You can also view, by audit type, up to five historic audits for the student by selecting them from the drop-down list on the far right.

Degree progress

The Degree progress dials show the percentage of degree requirements and degree credits completed in the student’s audit. The student’s cumulative GPA is also displayed here.

  • If a student has completed 98% of requirements, they are considered to have met all degree requirements pending successful completion of currently enrolled coursework.

  • If a student has completed 100% of requirements, they have completed all degree requirements and are eligible for degree certification.

  • The GPA listed in this section draws directly from the transcript calculation, and does not include pre-registered or in-progress courses.

Degree block

The Degree block summarizes the requirements necessary for a student to complete a degree.  All degree audits require a Degree block. The Degree block may be comprised of several sets of requirements grouped into other blocks described below.  The Degree block calculates the minimum requirements still needed to complete the degree. The Degree block may also display notes specific to that student’s degree requirements.

Other blocks

In addition to the Degree block, a student’s audit will include other requirements grouped into blocks, specific to that student’s program of study.  These could include blocks for:

  • Majors and minors

  • NTC core curriculum

  • Residency requirements

  • Pre-Medical Advice Block

  • Other school or degree-specific requirements
