Overview

Use this report to proof diploma names and catch bogus phonetic names prior to degree conferral.

Diploma Name Rules:

You must use your legal name on your diploma.The following exceptions may apply:

 

  1. Middle names may be omitted, abbreviated, or appear in full. You may include your maiden name as a middle name.

a. EG: Legal Name - Mary Jane Smith

i. Mary Smith

ii. Mary J. Smith

iii. Mary Jane Smith

iv. Mary Jane Johnson Smith

b. Abbreviated middle names must be punctuated with a period at the end.

 

  1. Students who have a chosen first name other than their legal first name may use this name, as long as it has been recorded on file with the University Registrar.

a. You may edit your chosen name on your Gibson Portal.

b. EG: Legal Name - John Henry Jones

i. Jack Jones

ii. Jane Jones

iii. J. Henry Jones

c. Abbreviated first names must be punctuated with a period at the end.

 

  1. LatinX Students who wish to append their mother's maiden name to their legal last name using a hyphen may do so. If both names are in Banner, both names must be on the diploma.
