Adding a concentration to a student's curriculum record
Declared concentrations are managed in SFAREGS. This article describes how to add and remove a concentration to a student’s curricula record in SFAREGS. At this time, concentrations codes are only added to a minor number of graduate programs.
As of July 2025, only a small number of programs- those listed in a table at the bottom of this article- are using the Banner “Concentration” field for approved concentrations. Other graduate and all undergraduate concentrations, tracks, specializations, etc. use Major 1, Major 2 or Minor field of study codes to differentiate these curricula. Several pre-existing academic programs, primarily at the undergraduate level use the convention of a / in the field of study to depict a concentration in the program.
Select the program to which the concentration is attached
In the SFAREGS key block, enter the (a) effective term of the declaration and (b) the student’s ID number. Check the (c) View Current/Active Curricula checkbox. (d) Go.
If you get an error message indicating that the student has a hold, (*) enter “OVR” in the Holds field. Then click Go.
Select the Curricula tab. In the Curriculum block, select the program to which you’re adding the concentration. Use the left and right triangle arrows to scroll through the current and active programs.
Duplicate the program
Click the Duplicate button, which makes a copy of the student’s curriculum so that you can change.
Click the Next Block button to get to the Field of Study block.
To add a concentration
Click the Insert button.
In the Type field, select or enter “CONCENTRATION”.
To select CONCENTRATION, click the button with the 3 dots on the Type field to display a list. On CONCENTRATION, either double click OR click once and then click the OK button.
Click into the Field of Study field.
Enter the concentration code in the Field of Study and leave the Department and Attached to Major fields blank. If the “Attached to Major” section auto-populates, delete the major. Click Save three times to save the curriculum change.
To remove a concentration
Select the concentration by clicking on it. Click the Delete button. Click Save.
