Identifying incomplete and in‑progress coursework on graduating student degree audits

This article outlines a Degree Works feature designed to enhance the visibility of lingering incomplete (I) and in‑progress (IP) grades ahead of degree certification.

Summary

Beginning Spring 2026, audit worksheets in Degree Works will display a notice if students who have applied to graduate bear coursework on record with incomplete (I) or in-progress (IP) grades. As all grading must be finalized prior to degree conferral, this automated notice reduces reliance on manual review methods to catch grade omissions and increases the reliability of audit checks during certification.

Benefits

  • Prevents overlooked I/IP grades late in the certification process

  • Improves audit accuracy by clearly flagging grade‑related risks

  • Supports the 98% reporting threshold by using rule logic intentionally

  • Automated disappearance of remarks once outstanding grading is resolved

Specifications

After a graduation application is submitted, the audit will scan for courses at the student’s goal career level with I and IP grades, triggering a remark in the degree block if such grades are found. When final grades are submitted for all coursework, the remark will disappear from the degree block.

The in-progress coursework notice will not negatively impact audit percent completion nor reporting reliant on this metric as it is standard for a student to have coursework in progress during their final term. However, the remark should no longer be present by degree certification.

The incomplete coursework notice will appear as an incomplete requirement within the degree block, appropriately escalating awareness by reducing percent completion of an otherwise IN-PROGRESS audit.
