Creating New Special Topics Courses
Departments and programs may request special topics courses via the Registrar Support form. When these requests come in, they will be reviewed by the Curriculum Manager. Follow the steps below to review these requests and create special topics courses.
Find out course number (typically, X81X numbering convention is followed)
Figure out if special topics course is actually needed by looking it up. If it exists already, but is inactive, reactivate the course. If it does not exist, follow the steps below.
Know what you’re copying from – find an already existing special topics course similar to what you’re creating.
Click Propose New Course
Click Propose New from Existing Course and enter course you’re copying from in Quick Add
Enter admin admin for Proposer Name/Email
Variable Title Course should always be Yes
Enter course number
Usually, special topics courses are Variable Credit; enter credit range
Enter all schedule types that they might possibly need
Effective Term will be whatever the school requested
Academic Level will follow course number (1000-5999 is undergraduate, 6000+ is graduate)
6000-6999 can be both undergraduate and graduate
Default answer for repeated for credit is Yes, number of repeats should be blank, maximum credits is 99
Grade Mode should follow Grade Mode Guidance
Prerequisites is always No
Catalog description: Specialty courses on particular topics taught by permanent or visiting faculty. Consult department or instructor for course description. Course with different topics may be repeated up to unlimited times for credit.
Faculty name/email put dashes
Leave rest blank
No core requirements should be selected (may be added at the section level)
Course Learning Outcomes put dash
Add Placeholder Syllabus (blank document) under Attach Syllabus
Click Admin Save
Go to The Banner Bridge portal: https://bannerssb.tulane.edu/PROD/
Log in and go to CIM bridge
Enter Course ID and click Submit
Push into Banner and then click “Continue and Remove from Queue.”
