Resolving Spanish 4000-level Pre-Requisite Errors for Study Abroad Coursework

Overview

Students who have completed study abroad coursework that satisfies 3000-level pre-requisites may encounter pre-requisite errors when attempting to register for 4000-level courses. This article explains why this occurs and provides solutions to resolve the issue.

Why This Issue Occurs

Pre-requisite checking occurs in Banner (the student database), not through the degree audit system. Study abroad courses are numbered 5380/5390, and these course numbers are not automatically recognized as satisfying pre-requisites in Banner, even when a degree audit petition/exception has been approved by the department.

Solutions

Option 1: RS40 Placement Code (Preferred)

Arrange for the Language Learning Center to enter the RS40 placement code on the student's record. This will resolve the pre-requisite error and allow the student to register for 4000-level courses.

Option 2: Pre-Requisite Override in Banner

The department can manually enter pre-requisite overrides in Banner using screen SFASRPO.

Who to Contact

  • Language Learning Center: For RS40 placement code entry
