Understanding the curriculum rules for NTC students with approved non-NTC majors
Current policy
Academic programs outside of Newcomb-Tulane College
“Newcomb-Tulane College students may pursue up to one major and one minor in SOPA..Students pursuing a non-NTC major and a major in NTC must declare the NTC major as their primary major except in the cases of coordinate majors.”
Applicable major and Banner curriculum coding
The following table shows examples of program strings and major codes that apply when the student is only pursuing that major.
Name | Program string | Major code |
|---|---|---|
Exercise Science, B.S. | UDSBS_UG | EXSC |
Health and Wellness, B.A. | UDLBA_UG | HLWL |
Homeland Security, B.A. | UDLBA_UG | HMLS |
Information Technology, B.S. | UDSBS_UG | ITIA, ITCL, ITCS, OR ITPS |
If a student wants to add a second major along with a non-NTC major, the primary major must be the NTC major. This also requires a change to the program string that aligns with the new primary major.
Decision tree
NTC student pursues non-NTC major
Is the major the NTC student’s only major?
Yes - use above coding. (reference: NTC Major-Minor-Certificate Banner Coding Reference)
No
Is the NTC major a stand-alone major (not a Coordinate major)?
Yes - The NTC major has to be the primary major
No – The non-NTC major will remain the primary major and the coordinate major will be secondary
Examples
Example 1
NTC student declares Health and Wellness, B.A. as primary major in second year of study. They are coded as UDLBA_UG, HLWL. In the third year of study, the student decides to add the Sociology major. The student is then re-coded as LABA_UG, SOCI (major 1, priority 10) and HLWL (major 2, priority 20).
Example 2
NTC student declares Exercise Science, B.S. as a primary major in the second year of study. They are coded as UDSBS_UG, EXSC. In the third year of study, the student decides to add the Digital Media Production Coordinate Major. The student’s base-curriculum and primary major remain and DMPC is added as major 2, priority 20.
